Chapter 45 - 45 Novel

Unable to get anything out of them, Yin Tao and the others left the kindergarten in disappointment.

“Sister Xiaotao, it’s better if you don’t accompany us. The next victim’s social relations are very simple. We’ll just ask her neighbors and friends. I don’t suppose we would be able to get anything out of her.” Xia Jin felt a little disappointed that he had no clue about this case.

Yin Tao also felt that she couldn’t help much, so she planned to return to the autopsy lab to take a look and see if she had missed anything.

Just as she reached the entrance of the autopsy lab, the cell phone in Yin Tao’s pocket rang.

“Captain Feng, what’s wrong?” She answered Feng Jing’s call.

“Where are you now?” Feng Jing’s voice was calm, but one could still hear the nervousness in his voice.

“The autopsy lab…”

“Alright, I’ll come over now.” Feng Jing hung up the phone after saying that. Yin Tao wasn’t sure what was going on. She thought for a moment and walked into the autopsy lab to wait for Feng Jing.

In less than ten minutes, Feng Jing arrived at the autopsy lab with a book in his hand.

“Captain Feng, did you discover anything new about the case?” Yin Tao poured a cup of water for Feng Jing and sat down, waiting for him to speak.

“I made a major discovery. Come and take a look at this book first.” Feng Jing took a sip of the water Yin Tao served him, and placed the thick book on the table.

“Mystery Case 307?” Yin Tao read the book title and looked at Feng Jing in puzzlement. “This should be a novel, right?”

Yin Tao glanced at the book cover. It appeared to be a common crime fiction, but the picture on the cover was a little bloody.

“Captain Feng, do you still read such novels?” Yin Tao felt that Feng Jing would more likely be reading some books on criminal law. This type of fiction with exaggerated plots did not match his style.

“Read it first.” Feng Jing gestured for Yin Tao to read it before sitting down beside her.

Yin Tao knew that Feng Jing wouldn’t ask her to read a novel for no reason, so she opened the book and started to read from the introduction.

At first, Yin Tao didn’t notice anything special about it. The novel only described some strange and cruel murders. However, as she read on, her expression became more and more solemn.

“Why is the case in this novel so similar to this dismemberment case?” Yin Tao had roughly finished reading the plot of the novel and felt that there must be some connection between this novel and this dismemberment case.

“It’s not just the case. Even the victims are very similar. They are of different ages and genders.” Feng Jing was certain that the murderer of this case must be a reader or author of this novel.

“Captain Feng, how did you discover this novel?” Yin Tao still felt that Feng Jing would not read such a novel.

“Ji Yu casually mentioned that a novel he read recently is very similar to this case.” Feng Jing picked up the book on the table and said to Yin Tao, “I asked him to bring it over for me to take a look. I didn’t expect that even the victims are extremely similar. This isn’t a simple coincidence.”

Nodding her head, Yin Tao agreed with Feng Jing’s view. “Then, are you looking for me to further compare the murderer’s modus operandi?”

Feng Jing got up from his seat and picked up the book at the same time. He said to Yin Tao, “It’s not just that. I want you to accompany me back to the rented apartment. I want to confirm something.”

Yin Tao also got up from her seat and followed Feng Jing out of the autopsy lab.

Sitting in Feng Jing’s car, Yin Tao couldn’t help but ask, “Captain Feng, can you tell me what you want to confirm at Sun Peng’s rented apartment?”

Feng Jing started the car and slowly explained to Yin Tao, “Sun Peng lost contact with the landlord last month after paying the rent. Sun Peng didn’t have a stable job and didn’t like to go out. Sometimes, after he had earned some money from part-time work, he liked to stay alone in his room.”

“Bai Luo said that Sun Peng’s neighbors said that they hadn’t seen Sun Peng. However, as he had always kept to himself and didn’t like to go out. No one found it strange.” Yin Tao also vaguely realized that something was amiss.

“Yeah, the evidence suggests that Sun spent a month in his room, but based on the autopsy report, he couldn’t have been dead for more than three days. The other victims, however, had been dead for up to five months.”

When the car stopped at a traffic junction, Feng Jing looked at Yin Tao, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, and continued to explain, “So, Sun Peng is either one of the people who knew about the mutilation case, or he was dismembered by the suspect and put into a plastic bucket filled with broken limbs.”
